Blood Pheasant

Bhutan birding June 2017/5

After the ‘traumatic’ trip from Trongsa we continued back to Paro birding en-route (…along with a ‘much-reduced’ Monsoon!) and arranged to meet up in Thimphu with our kind host Norbu and a birding-friend from Singapore Alfred Chia (…who was on a ‘cultural-visit’ there with his lovely lady Bee Lan)

It was nice to enjoy a ‘cuppa’ with friends and discuss future trips.

For the remaining couple of days we birded along the Paro River and up to Chelela Pass.

There were at least 3 Ibisbill near the bridge, probably the same family that we saw at the start of the trip. Hopefully their future is fairly-safe but there seemed to be plenty of disturbance from humans and dogs.

The River Lapwing also seemed to be nesting and were very vocal, but the highlight for me was finding a female Mandarin Duck, apparently an ‘occasional-rarity’ in Bhutan.

Three gorgeous chickens on the last-day on one mountain-side, Himalayan Monal, Kalij and some fabulous Blood Pheasants only metres away! So ended the first of hopefully many trips to the wonderful Kingdom of Bhutan.
